Wiesmann MF3 Engine Damage — the S54 in the best hands.

The best-known Wiesmann runs the best-known M engine: the S54 straight-six from the BMW M3 E46. Its weak points — connecting rod bearings above all — are our daily business. We overhaul your MF3 engine before a wear issue turns into major damage.

Important: Knocking under load or metal debris in the oil? Stop driving. On the S54, the step from connecting rod bearing wear to crankshaft damage is short — and expensive.

II · The Engine

M3 technology in roadster clothing.

The MF3 was built for 18 years — longer than any other Wiesmann. Until 2001, S50 engines from the M3 E36 were used (286 or 321 hp), after that the S54B32 from the M3 E46 with 343 hp and a rated speed of 7,900 rpm. A high-revving naturally aspirated engine that demands care — and rewards it with one of the best engine experiences around.

Good to know

BMW stopped S50/S54 production long ago — replacement engines are rare and expensive. Overhauling the original engine is almost always the only sensible option for the MF3 and simultaneously preserves the collector value (matching numbers).

III · Weak Points

The three classics — and how to spot them.

01 · Connecting rod bearings
The best-known S54 failure Tight bearing clearances and high revs take their toll on the bearing shells. Symptoms: knocking under load, metal debris in the oil or oil filter. Preventive replacement on the removed or dropped engine is the cheapest insurance against crankshaft damage.
02 · VANOS
Rattling from the VANOS unit Wear in the VANOS unit shows up as rattling at idle and under partial load, rough running and power loss. We overhaul the unit including all wear parts.
03 · Standing damage
The seasonal-vehicle problem Many MF3s cover just a few hundred kilometres a year. Long standing times mean dry bearing surfaces on cold start, gummed-up seals and condensation in the oil — wear despite low mileage.

IV · Our Services

From bearing replacement to complete overhaul.

1.
Preventive connecting rod bearing replacement New bearing shells and connecting rod bolts, bearing clearances measured and documented. The single most important step for a long S54 life — cost: from €1,600.
2.
VANOS overhaul Overhaul of the VANOS unit with all wear parts, including inspection of the chain tensioner and valve timing.
3.
Cylinder head overhaul Skimming, machining the valve seats, new valve stem seals, adjusting valve clearance — on the bucket-tappet S54 with shim adjustment, a job for a specialist.
4.
Complete overhaul after engine damage Full disassembly, measuring, machining of the block and crankshaft, new parts in OEM quality, documented assembly. Your original engine — like new.
Delivery Bring the vehicle to Oberhausen or ship the removed engine from anywhere in Germany — all details on the Wiesmann overview page.

V · Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about the MF3 and S54.

When should the connecting rod bearings on the S54 be replaced?

At the latest with first symptoms like knocking under load or metal debris in the oil — then immediately. Preventively, the right time depends on mileage, driving profile and oil history; for the lightly but hard-driven MF3, sooner rather than later. We’ll advise you based on your specific vehicle.

My MF3 still has the S50 from the M3 E36 — do you work on that too?

Yes. The S50B30 and S50B32 are closely related to the S54 in design and share the same core issues — connecting rod bearings, VANOS, valve clearance. We fully overhaul both engines.

Can I ship the engine to you removed?

Yes — your workshop removes it and ships the engine to us in Oberhausen on a pallet. Alternatively, you deliver the complete vehicle via enclosed transport. After the overhaul, the engine goes back with full documentation.

What’s the difference between preventive bearing replacement and an overhaul?

Preventive connecting rod bearing replacement swaps bearing shells and bolts before damage occurs — manageable effort, predictable cost. If the crankshaft has already scored, only an overhaul with disassembly, measuring and machining helps. That’s exactly why it pays not to wait for the first knock.

Does an engine overhaul reduce my MF3’s value?

Quite the opposite. The original engine stays in the vehicle (matching numbers), and a cleanly documented overhaul by a specialist workshop is a selling point — an untreated connecting rod bearing issue, on the other hand, is a price drag.
